2 Samuel 7:1-14

This morning I'll be reading 2 Samuel chapter 7 verses 1 through 14.
And I'll be reading from the Holman Christian Standard Bible.
2 Samuel 7:1–14
1st and 2nd Samuel center around three key figures in the Bible,,, Samuel,,, Saul,,, and David. The verses that we read this morning,,, include conversation between David and Nathan the prophet,,, and word from God.
2 Samuel 7:1–14 (HCSB)
1 When the king had settled into his palace and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, 2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “Look, I am living in a cedar house while the ark of God sits inside tent curtains.” 3 So Nathan told the king, “Go and do all that is on your heart, for the Lord is with you.” 4 But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 5 “Go to My servant David and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you to build a house for Me to live in? 6 From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until today I have not lived in a house; instead, I have been moving around with a tent as My dwelling. 7 In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked anyone among the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel: Why haven’t you built Me a house of cedar?’ 8 “Now this is what you are to say to My servant David: ‘This is what the Lord of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from following the sheep to be ruler over My people Israel. 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a name for you like that of the greatest in the land. 10 I will establish a place for My people Israel and plant them, so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not afflict them as they have done 11 ever since the day I ordered judges to be over My people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. “ ‘The Lord declares to you: The Lord Himself will make a house for you. 12 When your time comes and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to Me. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a human rod and with blows from others.
God bless the reading and the hearing of your word this morning.
The word of God for the people of God.
Thanks be unto God.
Let us pray:
Dear Lord,,, as we begin this morning,,, with everyone here today and all that are listening and watching by video,,, we ask that you open our ears to hear and our hearts and minds to receive the message that you have for us today,,, In Jesus' name I pray,,, Amen.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Last Sunday we looked at the “Mystery” that Paul talked about in Ephesians and the way that we need to remember to praise God all the time,,, even before we get an answer for prayer,,, because we know how faithful God is and we need to recognize that,,, and be sure that we give God the thanks and praise that He deserves!
This morning we are back in the Old Testament looking at the promise that God makes to David as he begins to receive “rest” from his enemies and he wants to build a “house” for the Ark of God.
Let’s look at these verses and see how they can help us in our walk with God this week.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 1 says: 1 When the king had settled into his palace and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,
So David has settled into his newly built palace,,, in Jerusalem where he has set up the capitol,,, and now for the time being,,, he can relax a little bit.
This rest,,, that it’s talking about in this verse,,, meant that the Kingdom of David was now brought together,,, and,,, there were no immediate threats.
There will be future problems,,, but nothing at this time,,, at least not any type of danger,,, lurking nearby.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 2 and 3 say: 2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “Look, I am living in a cedar house while the ark of God sits inside tent curtains.” 3 So Nathan told the king, “Go and do all that is on your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
This is the first time that we hear from a prophet named Nathan in 1st or 2nd Samuel,,, of course,,, he’s mentioned in 1 Chronicles where this story is told,,, and he is also instrumental in other places further into David’s reign that are recorded,,, but this is the first time that he is mentioned.
But,,, David felt that it was unsuitable for him to be dwelling in his fine home while the ark of God was kept inside tent curtains.
So he notified Nathan the prophet of his intention to build a house for the ark.
Nathan at first approved,,, probably because he knew that David truly loved the Lord,,, but,,, apparently he acted without consulting God first.
As we see in the next few verses.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 4 through 7 say: 4 But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 5 “Go to My servant David and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you to build a house for Me to live in? 6 From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until today I have not lived in a house; instead, I have been moving around with a tent as My dwelling. 7 In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked anyone among the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel: Why haven’t you built Me a house of cedar?’
Now after finding out from the Lord that David is not going to build a house for Him,,, Nathan is told to go and tell David that,,,
Ever since they have left Egypt,,, God has dwelt in the tent,,, and further more,,, He hasn’t asked anyone about building Him a house.
And,,, this explanation continues in the next few verses.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 8 through 11 says: 8 “Now this is what you are to say to My servant David: ‘This is what the Lord of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from following the sheep to be ruler over My people Israel.
God tells Nathan that He has brought David from the lowly job of a shepherd boy,,, to ruler of His people.
He’s been with him no matter what he’s been through,,, and He has helped him destroy all of his enemies.
And now God tells Nathan that He will make David’s name,,, like that of the greatest in the land,,, and,,, make a place for His people Israel so that they may live there and not be disturbed again.
And again,,, God tells him that He will give you rest from all your enemies.
Then,,, God tells Nathan the news that we know to be true,,, even to this day,,, and news that will be true,,, forever,,, where it says,,, “ ‘The Lord declares to you: The Lord Himself will make a house for you.
We know this because we are able to read the “rest of the story”,,, (remember Paul Harvey,,, He would always end whatever story he was talking about “And now you know the rest of the story”) — That’s what came to my mind when I wrote this because,,, we do know the rest of the story,,, God had all of this worked out and through David’s line,,, we would have our Savior,,, Jesus Christ and how He came into the world,,, lived,,, died on the cross for our sins,,, was resurrected,,, and today lives in heaven,,, all for us!
That’s the meaning behind these words,,,
And we see more as we read the last few verses.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 12 through 14 say: 12 When your time comes and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to Me. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a human rod and with blows from others.
God tells Nathan that when David’s time is up,,, He will allow his son,,, David’s descendant,,, to build the temple.
And God also tells him that He will establish the throne of his kingdom forever,,, this shows us again,,, the part that we know about,,, of Jesus’ kingdom that will never end.
These verses are a good example of an Old Testament passage in which some elements find fulfillment in the immediate future (Solomon and other strictly human descendants of David), while other elements will be realized only in the more distant future (Jesus Christ, the Son of David; cf. Luke 1:31–33).
-----------------------------------------------------------
So we have looked at these verses this morning,,, and we have seen how much David loved the Lord,,, how much he wanted to do something special for Him,,, but God told him,,, “No”.
But,,, we also know,,, “the rest of the story”!
God told David “No” on this project,,, but blesses him beyond anything David could have imagined at the time,,, by bringing His Perfect Plan to fulfillment through his descendents and the birth of a little baby Jesus,,, brought into the world to save us from sin,,, and who even now,,, after His life,,, death,,, and resurrection,,, lives in Heaven at the right hand of God,,, and His kingdom will last,,, forever,,, all of this because David was intent on doing his best for God,,, and trusted Him to do what was best,,, even when,,, God told him,,, “No”!
And because we know all of this,,, this should help us to have faith that the word of God is true,,, and will not change.
We can look back through many years in the Bible and history,,, and time after time,,, see where this plan has,,, and continues today,,, to come true,,, just as it has been written about by so many men of God,,, and it will continue until Jesus comes back again,,, to finally fulfill this plan in it’s entirety!
-----------------------------------------------------------
So as we go our separate ways today,,, hopefully we will remember these verses and the faith that David had in God,,, even as He tells him “No”,,, and the way that he trusted him,,, and allowed God to do things His way,,, in His time,,, something that I’m sure would always help us if we followed David’s example,,, and allowed God,,, to do for us,,, the same way.
If you have never made the commitment to allow Jesus to be your Personal Savior,,, please make that decision today.
We aren't promised tomorrow,,, so the choice must be made today.
We don't know the hour or the day when Jesus comes back nor do we know if we will be called home,,, we are just told to be ready.
And to be ready,,, you must have made the decision to follow Jesus,,, be sure that you have made that decision today!
-----------------------------------------------------------
So as we sing our final hymn,,, let me remind you that the alter is always open,,,
If you feel God speaking to you,,, don't hesitate to come,,, maybe you just have questions,,, God will answer,,, you just have to ask Him,,, whatever the need may be,,,
As we sing the final hymn,,, come if needed!
